Stafford County Open Burn Laws

In an ongoing effort to combat wildfires, such as the one that inspired Brooke Volunteer Fire Department to be founded, the Stafford County Fire Marshal's Office works to enforce local and state regulations that ensure both safety and environmental protection when it comes to open burning. To do this, the Stafford County Open Burn Law was enacted in 1978 to ensure that citizens and property would be safeguarded. Today you can see signs throughout the County that say "Call before you burn! 540.658.4440" to remind everyone that you can safely burn your refuse at your discretion, provided it falls within the parameters of the Open Burn Law.

Per both the Stafford County Open Burn Law and the Virginia Department of Forestry Burn Law, we are currently in the afternoon-burning-only period of the year, which lasts from February 15 to April 30, and mandates that all open burns must be conducted from 4:00 PM to 12:00 midnight. Remember to call before you burn!

Should you have any questions, you can call the Fire Marshal's Office at 540.658.7200 or the Stafford County Emergency Communications Center at 540.658.4440 (24/7).
